Black granites

About Cameleon, Unique Finishes, and Vibrant Shades

In recent years, black granites have faced an image problem. The material is considered dull and no longer trendy, but nothing could be further from the truth. In this article, we are eager to demonstrate that black granites are still very much alive. Moreover, not all black granites are the same, and we are continuously experimenting with new materials and innovative finishes. Immerse yourself in this article and explore the world of black granite!

Black Granite from Our Own Quarry

Our Family Member, Cameleon, is a South African producer of granite slabs for interiors, construction, and monuments. Nari Black granite is quarried from our own site. Additionally, Cameleon specializes in purchasing and processing natural stone blocks from other African quarries. Let's take a closer look at African black granites:

Belfast Extra

Belfast Extra letano - Belfast Extra Scuro letano

Belfast Extra

An evenly black, very fine-grained granite with no cloud patterns and no pits. The Extra Scuro variant is treated to achieve a darker, blacker color. As a replacement for the Indian Black I, there is an increasing shift towards Belfast Extra Scuro.

Nari Black & Rustenburg

Nari Black letano - Rustenburg letano

Nari Black & Rustenburg

These speckled granites feature a moderately fine-grained, uniform structure. Nari and Rustenburg have the same appearance but differ in grain size. The grain of Rustenburg MR is finer than that of Nari Black (depending on the sawing direction). Alternative names for this type of black natural stone are Jasberg, Nero Impala, and Rustenbuild.

Zimbabwe Black

Zimbabwe Black letano

Zimbabwe Black

This black granite features a slightly clouded pattern with tiny dark gray specks. We offer several variants of Zimbabwe Black:

  • Zimbabwe Black: Lighter, paler spots may appear scattered, always treated

  • Extra: Fewer noticeable spots and vague clouds, treated or untreated (anzano).

  • Classic: More pronounced cloud structure, untreated, an alternative in construction for Indian black granites (5 cm thickness) or flamed for outdoor applications (3 cm thickness).

This material is a perfect alternative to Black I (Extra) and Jet Black.

As Hard as Granite

Granite is the embodiment of durability. It is a rugged stone, yet surprisingly playful. Its beautiful texture tells the story of a long formation process. Granite has few limitations, often reserved for high-quality applications or where durability is paramount. Granite is used in both indoor and outdoor applications in designs that aim for a certain prestige. Granites are wear-resistant and scratch-resistant, as well as acid- and frost-resistant, making them suitable for a wide range of uses, from (kitchen) countertops and stairs to facade cladding and paving projects. Heavy traffic, frequent footfall, chemical exposure, cold, or heat... granite can handle it in most cases.

Black Granites with Crystals

In our collection, you'll also find black granites with unique crystalline structures. The Zimbabwean granite Stargate, processed by our Family Member Cameleon, is a moderately fine-grained black granite with fine golden-yellow crystals. The Indian granite Star Galaxy is moderately fine-grained with silver-colored fine crystals scattered throughout the mass.

Dark Finishes of Granites

Most black granites originate from gray hues. Thanks to some of our unique finishes (letano, alligato, and polished), they acquire a deeper black color. Other finishes like anzano give the material a softer appearance.

A good illustration of this is the gray-black granite Steel Grey, which, depending on the finish, can have either a gray or black appearance.

Black Granites with Colorful Shades

Looking for a dark granite but find pure black granite too sober? No problem! In our range, you'll also find several black granites with colorful veins and crystals.
