Permeable Natural Stone Installation: Fact, Not Fiction

OutdoorPavingDriveways

Did you know that concrete tiles aren’t the only option to meet regulations for permeable paving? With natural stone and ceramics, you can create patios and driveways that are both ecologically responsible and fully compliant with regulations. In an era where water management is increasingly vital, natural stone offers an aesthetic and practical alternative to more traditional solutions. In this article, we explore how smart techniques and beautiful materials can create a sustainable outdoor space that looks fantastic. Discover how to effortlessly blend functionality with aesthetics as we highlight various possibilities.

Why Choose Permeable Installation?

Regulations require rainwater to infiltrate the soil to maintain groundwater levels. Each municipality has its own rules and requirements, but a well-designed permeable installation using natural stone or ceramics meets the strictest standards and contributes to a more sustainable living environment.

There are three effective rainwater infiltration systems:

1. Installation of a wadi or infiltration basin

1. Installation of a wadi or infiltration basin

This system directs rainwater to a wadi or infiltration basin, where it is collected in an underground reservoir and slowly seeps into the soil. This is ideal for larger gardens or areas with ample space. Water can also be directed to a cistern for reuse.

2. Use of special spacers

2. Use of special spacers

This technique involves loosely laying natural stone tiles on a substrate of gravel, using special spacers to provide stability and create wide open joints. This allows water to reach the substrate through the joints, which can remain open or be filled with fine gravel.

Key considerations for this method include:

  • Stones should have a minimum thickness of 5 to 8 cm (depending on the load).

  • At least 10% of the surface should consist of open joints to ensure adequate permeability.

3. Fully draining installation

3. Fully draining installation

Fully draining installation is the most recommended method, featuring a draining sub-base and special permeable joint materials. This system offers all the benefits of a traditional installation with bound cement joints, including:

  • Use of thin tiles (2 to 3 cm thick), both ceramic and natural stone.

  • Optimal walking comfort

  • Beautiful appearance

  • Low maintenance of joints: no weeds, no loose joint materials

This installation method utilizes permeable products for both joint mortar, bedding layer, and sub-base. Furthermore, the additional cost of these products is largely offset by easier and therefore faster, hence more cost-effective installation.

Natural Stone: Versatile and Durable

Natural stone remains a timeless choice for outdoor spaces due to its durability, elegance, and natural appearance. Its unique colour variations allow for a personal and authentic design tailored to your style. Additionally, natural stone is naturally low to non-porous, making it easy to maintain and a practical option.

Extensive Range of Colours and Textures

Our extensive range of natural stone includes thin tiles for fully bonded installation (method 3) and thicker pavers for installation with open joints (method 2). You'll always find the perfect match for your project!

Permeable Installation: Stylish, Functional, and Sustainable

With the right techniques and materials, you can create not only a visual masterpiece but also contribute to a more sustainable world in compliance with regulations. Whether it’s a driveway with pavers or a terrace with flagstones, the possibilities are endless. Opt for the fully draining installation method and combine functionality with aesthetics in your outdoor space.
