Paving in Blue Antique - Utoya (NO)

Bush HammeredSandblasted

Utoya, Norway

Family Member Larvik Granite supplied the quality material Blue Antique, with sandblasted and bush-hammered finishing for The National Memorial monument at Utøyakaia (Utøya – Norway). The monument was constructed to commemorate all 77 victims of the attacks on the island of Utøya and in the capital of Oslo on July 22, 2011. Part of the material has the bush hammered finish meaning that small indentations were made in the natural stone using a high impact machine. That way a rough, weathered surface was created. Bush-hammering the stone brings a natural effect and makes each stone unique. On the first step of the Blue Antique stairs a row of 77 bronze columns is placed. Once a year the sun will pass across the sky and shed a special shadow effect on the bronze columns. This will happen at the same time-interval the attack took place. This idea and concept determined the positioning of the 77 columns. Forever connected with the tragedy of July 22nd, 2011. Also sandblasted finishing is used in the construction.
